GPS to Enforce Laws of the Road?

This can Save so many Lives!

Can GPS Apps and Lower Speeds Transform Road Safety (Even Without Safer Cars)?

Imagine roads where speeding, red lights, and reckless driving are a thing of the past. This futuristic vision of traffic safety might be closer than you think, thanks to advancements in GPS technology and a potential rethink of speed limits. However, the road to safer roads might have unexpected obstacles, such as corporate resistance to prioritizing safety features in car design.

Enforcing the Rules Electronically:

The core idea is a mandatory GPS app for all drivers. This app would be linked to speed limits, traffic signals, and potentially even detect erratic driving patterns. Here's how it could revolutionize safety, with an extra layer of security:

  • Required Activation for Ignition: Imagine a system where the app would be required to be on and functioning before the car's ignition would even start. Similar to a breathalyzer for drunk drivers, this could be a game-changer for safety.

  • Real-Time Speed Enforcement: The app could automatically detect speeding and trigger fines or warnings. Imagine never needing a speeding ticket again – the app would take care of it!

  • Automated Stop Sign and Red Light Enforcement: Cameras linked to the app could automatically detect violations, deterring dangerous behavior.

  • Reckless Driving Detection: The app might monitor for sudden swerving or braking, potentially leading to driver education requirements or interventions.

Lower Speeds Mean Fewer Tragedies

Safety isn't just about catching bad behavior. Studies consistently show a direct correlation between speed and crash severity. However, the ideal speed limit also depends on vehicle safety features – features that car manufacturers might be hesitant to implement due to:

  • Corporate Profitability: Unfortunately, some car manufacturers prioritize profit over safety features. Adding advanced safety features can increase car prices, potentially impacting sales.

Lower Speeds for a Brighter Future

Despite the potential hurdle of corporate resistance to advanced safety features, a two-pronged approach can still significantly improve road safety:

  • Lower Speeds: Implementing lower speed limits can significantly reduce fatalities and injuries.

  • GPS App Enforcement: Enforcing traffic laws electronically can deter dangerous driving behavior.

Studies on Speed Limits and Safety

Studies support the safety benefits of lower speeds:

  • A 2019 study by the AAA Foundation found that reducing speed limits by just 5 mph on rural roads could prevent over 36,000 serious injuries and 2,500 deaths annually in the US.

  • The European Union reports a 20% reduction in fatalities between 2010 and 2020, which they partly attribute to a focus on lower speeds.

The Road Ahead

While there's no single solution, a combination of GPS app enforcement and lower speeds has the potential to significantly reduce traffic fatalities and injuries, even without relying on a complete overhaul of car safety features by manufacturers. Finding common ground and focusing on safety can pave the way for a brighter future on our roads.
